Bicycles on the roadway are, by law, vehicles with the same rights and responsibilities as motorized vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2011, 677 pedalcyclists were killed and an additional 48,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes. The majority of the pedalcyclists killed or injured in 2011 were males. The highest numbers of male fatalities were between the ages of 45-54, and most males injured were between 16-20.
There is a national movement to advance bicycle safety. Motorists must share the road with bicyclists; bicyclists must ride safely and wear helmets. The legal system must support safe bicycling, and the roads and paths must safely accommodate bicyclists. Remember to wear your helmet and ride within designated bike paths. Don't forget to wear reflective clothing at nighttime to ensure that you are visible to motorists.
